oceanographic expedition, which led to the H.M.S. Challenger
Expedition, under Wyville Thomson's direction.
Preliminary
Account: The Atlantic, Vol. I and Vol
II
(1878) By C. Wyville Thomson. This preliminary account of the H.M.S.
Challenger Expedition was published shortly after the conclusion of the
expedition.
The Cruise
of H.M.S.
Challenger (1878). By W.J.J. Spry, R.N. This popular "Travelogue"
of the voyage was written by one of the Naval Officers on the
cruise. It contains many details that are not included in the
official reports.
Notes
by a
Naturalist
(1892). By H.N. Moseley. This is another narrative of the voyage
written by one of the scientific staff embarked on the Expedition. It
includes much information about the islands visited on the cruise.
The
Depths of the
Ocean
(1912). By Sir John Murray and Dr. Johan Hjort. This is a "state of the
art" summary of oceanography as seen by John Murray, who was a member
of the H.M.S. Challenger Expedition and succeeded C. Wyville Thomson as
the general editor of the Challenger Reports. This book also includes
an account of the scientific research expeditions of the Norwegian
Steamer, Michael Sars in the
North Atlantic.
